"Sometimes you get so pissed off, you just gotta scream and shout and make some noise!"

Junko Ishiki was destined for greatness from the moment that the spirit of Minsteru Teru was born into her body. After certain medical records were uncovered that revealed the presence of the Minsteru Spirit, Junko was whisked away to be trained in exile under the wing of the affluent and powerful Togami Group at a young age. But the Togami Group was not well-practiced when it came to raising magical girls—she honed her abilities, sure, but the process left Junko with amazingly flawed morality, nonexistent social tact, and a superiority complex. Furthermore, while the Togami Group had managed to train a weapon of mass destruction, their grand design for Minsteru Teru was always that of a supernatural trump card to be kept up their sleeve, to be used against the world of ordinary humans. Political rivals, opposing groups, and uncooperative branches of the government were just a few of the targets the Togami Group intended to use Junko against. Lacking sufficient knowledge about the expansive world of magic that Teru was part of, the Togami Group never saw reason to train her against demons or dark magic. And can you really call yourself a magical girl when your last experience with a demon was over two hundred years ago?

Character Summary

Feudal Japan

Early Feudal Japan gave birth to many things: arts, traditions, legends, and of course, spirits. Although exactly how the three Minsteru Spirits came to be had been swallowed by the ages, the fact remains that three of Emperor Minamoto no Yoritomo’s minstrels were held in such high regard that the Emperor could not stand to let their talents wither away and die with age. He called upon the court’s conjurer for his services, although the exact incantation used was never quite clear. But the aftermath remained the same: for centuries the three Minsteru spirits would reincarnate across Japan, spreading music and song as a unified force, even stepping to the Emperor’s defense during times of need.

But over time, the power of song and music gave way to more militant means of offense and defense, and the Minsteru Spirits lost their position of power within the Emperor’s court. Instead they found solace in each other, and through the ages the Minsteru Spirits remained strong and dedicated to the cause of fighting the various evils in the world through their own endeavors with song and music. However, soon even the Spirits ended up separated from one another. Generations passed with the Spirits only growing further and further apart. In 1996, Minsteru Teru's host body died— and the Minsteru Spirit rushed to the nearest suitable host: a newborn named Junko Ishiki.

Family Life

As a child, Junko was loud and energetic and difficult-- a nightmare for the large family confined to a small apartment. Before Junko even turned three she was already raising hell in the growing household. She made noise and music with anything that she could get her hands on, and she’d babble about her friends, while her parents were sure that she had never met anyone with the names she provided. SheHer parents had her tested at a young age for mental disabilities because of her behaviour, and while every test was brought back negative, those tests were ultimately what led to her name falling into the lap of the esteemed and affluent Togami Group.

The Group made arrangements for Junko to fall under their care—and the Togami Group always gets what they want. By using bribes of monetary value and empty promises, the Togami Group convinced the Ishiki family that Junko would be much healthier and happier in their care. Within a few weeks Junko's birth family was entirely cut out of her life—although Junko was much too young to understand at the time. She didn't understand the implications of spending the next thirteen years of her life on a secluded island, two hundred miles off the coast of Japan.

The Minsteru Project

A small group of six individuals accompanied Junko to this secluded island, where she lived like a princess for the next thirteen years. She was at first trained in a slew of musical instruments; she had prodigal skill in everything that she picked up. This was alongside her fundamental education, taken care of by the Togami Family’s private tutor. When she was nine and had mastered most instruments that the Togami Group had to offer, she was presented with the Minsteru Harp, which the Togami Group had come into possession of several years prior courtesy of Ends of the World.

Junko took to the Minsteru Harp like a duck to water—and before too long she rediscovered the Metamorphosis Sonata, thus transforming her into her Henshin form of Minsteru Teru. From that moment on, her studies were focused on unlocking her full potential. When she turned fourteen, her powers were finally given direction. The Togami Group hadn’t provided her with this training out of the goodness of their hearts, after all. She was to use these newfound abilities to benefit the Group and the Group alone. During her first test run, Junko was provided with a secluded room and a training dummy as her target. Within seconds she completely destroyed the room and shredded the training dummy, but left herself was seizing, drooling, and out of commission for several hours. It became clear that the challenge wouldn’t be in raising an effective weapon—but rather, in taming it. A wild fire destroys everything in its path, and a girl as fickle and erratic as Junko would be no different.

But of course, Junko had been raised for over a decade as the sole authority figure in her life, and she did not take kindly to being told to restrain herself. The members of the Minsteru Project had experienced enough of her powers to know to fear them. This dilemma was brought to the esteemed head of the Togami Family, the only abstract figure that Junko revered. His instructions were simple—shut down the Minsteru Project.

Present Day

Within the year, arrangements were made for Junko to be reintroduced to society. She would learn control by necessity, continuing her studies in the halls of Ohtori Academy (one of many schools that the Togami Group had a hand in). While she would still be on call with the family (and it would be expected for family business to rank above anything else), she would also be expected to fend for herself in the high school environment.

So with no more than Togami-provided lodging and funds and the Minsteru Harp, Junko Ishiki set foot into mainland Japan for the first time in well over thirteen years.
