"If we need to fight against them and win to get our words across, I feel like I’ll be able to fight without hesitation."

Profile

Fate Testarossa has earned no small amount of notoriety from her time as both an enforcer of Dark Fall and victim of Precia Testarossa’s ambitions. After her mother’s apparent demise during the Garden of Time incident, she has left Dark Fall to join the Tuners and is currently being fostered by the Harlaown family. A quiet, shy, and somewhat withdrawn girl Fate has substantial trouble accepting affection from others due to a lifetime of abuse. Recently she’s made significant progress thanks to her newly adopted family and friends whom she regards with awe, considering them her saviors, and vowed to protect their smiles to make up for her wrongs. Her kind and sweet nature has quickly endeared her to her classmates at Infinity Institute, but less so amongst the Tuners who look upon her defection with justified suspicion. Despite being on closely scrutinized probation she’s been grudgingly accepted for the firepower that she and her dutiful Intelligent Device, Bardiche bring to the table. The aerial mage has swiftly earned the nickname ‘Golden Flash’ from the color of her mana and the speed she’s known for.

History

The creation of Project Fate, Fate Testarossa was originally created by Precia Testarossa to replace her daughter, Alicia Testarossa, who was lost in a tragic accident. Despite being given Alicia's memories, the slightest differences between her and Alicia caused her to be immediately considered inadequate to the task by Precia. Discarded as a failure from nearly the beginning, Precia created a familiar, Linith, to see that she was properly trained as a mage.

In a sense, Linith was her first true mother, as she raised Fate while giving Fate the affection she was always denied by Precia, training her to be the best mage she could be and grounded the increasingly unstable Precia to prevent Fate's situation from becoming worse. During this time, Fate found a sickly wolf cub, and despite Linith's warnings, saved the wolf cub by making her her familiar, Arf. The two trained together, Fate honing her skills as an aerial mage, while Arf trained to be her rearguard support, the two complementing each other in the best ways. This was the happiest time of Fate's short life, but it was not to last.

Once her training was finished, Linith's contract was set to expire. As her last act she created Bardiche, Fate's intelligent device, intending that one day he would allow her to carve through her own sad destiny to create her own. After giving him to her, she told Fate her goodbyes and walked out into the snow, where Precia released her from her contract and she presumably perished.

Fate's life worsened after that, as neglect from Precia transformed into more severe forms of emotional and physical abuse. Complete obedience was demanded of her, and she quickly became more and more withdrawn to keep herself safe. She came to believe that she was the one in the wrong, because of her memories of Precia being a kind mother. It made perfect sense to her that she must be doing something wrong, to be treated in this way. When Precia gave her her mission to Earth to collect missing Lost Logia, the Jewel Seeds, she leapt at the opportunity. She believed immediately that this was the way she could prove herself, and once she came to Earth, threw herself completely into the mission.

Once on Earth, she was lent out to Dark Fall as an Enforcer, considering what she did for them simply another expression of her devotion for her mother. However, everything changed the moment she came into conflict with one Nanoha Takamachi, an earthling who had been granted the Midchildan device Raising Heart. While at first, the girl was seen as a mere obstacle for her to defeat and move on, there was always this underlying sadness for having to hurt someone which resulted in subdued apologies. For this reason, the girl's earnest demands for Fate to talk to her each time they came into conflict began to wear down the distance between them. With each encounter, she became less convinced that what she was doing was right. When other Midchildan mages like Lera, Ren, and Endo joined the battles against her, the began to feel like it was her against a world trying to prevent her from granding her mother's wish. A wish she was entirely ignorant of.

Over time, her rivalry against Nanoha and Lera only became more heated, with the stakes becoming higher every time. During this time, Fate found herself growing increasingly closer to the executives of Labyrinth. While their goals were different, she found solace in their devotion to Mobius that allowed her to rationalize that her devotion to her mother was correct. Westar became her comrade in arms, while Soular reaffirmed her belief in the rightness of her mission, and Eas offered her own particular brand of advice that kept her on her current path.

It all culminated in a duel for the jewel seeds against Nanoha Takamachi, over Tokyo's famous rainbow bridge. Completely convinced that she'd win, she went all out, overpowering her rival at first, until through the strength of her heart, Nanoha used her ultimate spell, Starlight Breaker, for the first time. Defeated, Fate tried to hand over the Jewel Seeds, only to have her mother try to kill her with a magical strike from another dimension. Taking refuge with Labyrinth in the wake of her failure, she was eventually convinced by her former rivals to come with them to the Tuners in order to help them stop her mother, whom she learned was going to use the Jewel Seeds in a reckless attempt to tear open the path to Al-Hazard. It was there that she met Lindy Harlaown for the first time.

It was there, when Fate made a heartfelt attempt to reach her mother, that she crushed her by telling her the truth of what she was, who she was. That she'd always been a hated failure in her eyes. While the experience was enough to break her, she managed to come back to the Garden of Time, to attempt to reach her mother again, and again, and again while many other Magical Girls engaged her in a battle to save their dimension. Despite her many attempts to reach her, in the end her mother fell with Alicia's body into the rift between dimensions, and has been presumed dead. Fate prefers to think that she started her long journey after all, together with the one she cares about the most.

After the Garden of Time incident, Fate has technically been in the custody of the Tuners, though thanks to advocacy from Lindy Harlaown, it has mostly become a loose probationary period before she'd be expected to join. Due to her time in Dark Fall, the Tuners mostly look upon her with suspicion, even if they respect the sheer firepower she brings to the table. She's been quick to make friends in her former rivals, and others beside and is expected to start Infinity Institute in the fall at the urging of her new foster parent, Lindy Harlaown...

But will Dark Fall and Labyrinth in particular really let her walk away from her past so easily?

Personality

Shy and withdrawn, yet kind and sweet. Fate Testarossa is a girl who has spent her entire life around family, and has only begun to understand the concept of friends, much less how to act around them. Right now, to her, her friends she mostly regards as her saviors. People who helped her when she was at her lowest, or people who tried to reach her through the strong intentions she wrapped around herself as a barrier against considering the gravity of the wrong she'd done. Now that she knows otherwise, she's horrified, and guilt-ridden by her actions which nearly brought untold destruction to this dimension.

While she can be somewhat self-absorbed in her own troubles, she's begun to be more receptive to the feelings of others, in particular those who feel trapped in their situations with no possible outcome other than a self-destructive one. She now truly believes that when words cannot reach a person, that the only thing that can is a true and strong heart. That does not mean that might makes right to her, but instead gives her the ability to reach someone who is doing wrong.

While Fate is a native of Midchilda, the entirety of her life was spent among family in the mountains of Altseim. As a result, she has very little social experience and can be especially awkward around children her own age. This is complicated as well by her lack of experience with Earth life in general. Most of the time she'd prefer to stay quiet, than say the wrong thing to one of her classmates. The one time when she seems to shine around other children is in anything that's the least bit competitive. Given how highly she values personal growth and strength, she tends to put her all into these competitions, rarely holding back.
