History

Sometimes life can just be difficult, and sometimes a child makes life more difficult for themselves through trying to put flawed upbringing into action. Eri Shimanouchi was an insular and lonely middle school girl who held the belief that no one quite understood her except for a single family member, and that no one else ever could. Craving companionship, she found it in other living things, namely plants, trees, and flowers. Her preference to them over most people caused others to say that she better understood plants than people, and most people were certainly right.

When her father, who was enlisted JSDF, suffered a training accident that left him comatose, she was faced with two choices, to let the person she felt understood her best go forever, or to make a contract for his sake. She chose the latter, but did she really think it through? Did she truly make the right choice? While at first she became a Puella Magi who believed in justice and protecting the innocent, trying to be selfless in her payment for her wish. She was far too obstinate in her beliefs and didn’t listen to wisdom from more experienced Puella Magi. This all changed when Eri encountered a Puella Magi named Yaori at the height of her own recklessness and nearly paid for it with her life.

While still trying to recover from the trauma of the experience, her father confronted her on his own assumptions about her dual life. Faced with these accusations, she chose to remain silent and was rejected by her family in a punishment that still baffles her. Forcibly banished to the Ohtori dorms, her family has all but cut off token support for her. Now faced with the consequences of her earlier recklessness, she finds herself with no territory of her own. Now a Puella Magi scavenger, she spends most of her free time searching for the occasional witch that appears on neutral ground. But just how long can she sustain herself doing so? What might she do once desperation truly sets in?

Personality

General Personality:

Eri is quite the different person from how she began, but to understand that, it's important to discuss where she came from. In the beginning she was a lonely, insular person who held the conceit that she was different from every other girl, that she thought and felt differently from everyone else. It was a flaw of her upbringing that caused her to value her family and the companionship of the flora over the world over people. While she was kind, honest, and forthright, seeking truth and desiring understanding; she could also be obstinate, and judgmental of the beliefs of others.

At first, her relationships with her family, especially her father, was what she valued most, but after someone managed to chip down her personal barriers, she began to understand the value of friendship. The problem is that she didn't really understand what friendship meant to her, and at first friends were more like a collection of names of people she'd spend her time with. Part of the reason she did this, is she felt that it was almost like padding her social life and hedging her bets against the belief people would abandon her once they got to know her. The people on this list she'd assist, or listen to, and she'd treat friendship almost mentally like an unspoken transaction. She'd give them her time if they reciprocated.

Lately, as she's come to understand the meaning of friendship more and more, and has slowly begun to consolidate people whose relationship actually means something to her. At the same time, she's come to understand that these friends are more family to her than her biological family, who has all but rejected her for reasons she doesn't understand. From these friends however, she's learned that truth, and blunt honesty are dangerous. She's learned that understanding can be painful. Thus she's more reserved now with the truth, and doesn't confront other people with it frequently because of how it might hurt them. Above all things, she desires someone who she feels understands her best.

How she related to being a Puella Magi, and how it changed her:

As a Puella Magi, originally she had the dangerous sort of naivete and brash courage that made her unsuitable to be a Magical Girl. She believed that she cared about everyone, and thought she was ready to sacrifice herself immediately if it was called for. Part of this was her upbringing as well, tales of valor instilled into her from her father's military war stories that made her believe she was some sort of 'soldier' for a cause, when in reality she didn't realize the implications of herself either. She also possessed an unhealthy admiration of another Puella Magi, whom she didn't truly understand, and tried to mimic her without actually understanding a thing about her. In battle, all of this made for a dangerous combination as it caused her to act like someone who was willing to martyr herself on a whim to even save a single person. Finally, her value of the truth caused her to be exceptionally forthright in telling people about how Puella Magi function, which can be a dangerous prospect indeed.

She was taught the true nature of her folly mostly by a Puella Magi she encountered and fought due to her own recklessness, Yaori. The result of the brutal battle is that she was left for dead, and saved only by the quick thinking of Madoka Kaname, Sayaka Miki, and Mami Tomoe. In the aftermath, with her spirit broken from the experience, she was taught a variety of lessons by other Puella Magi, some harsh, some more gentle.

As a result of these lessons, she's come to value her life. She's come to understand that she values certain people's lives more than others, and she's determined above all else to survive not only for herself, but for the people she values and wants to protect. She's more reserved with what she knows about how Puella Magi work to Mahou Shoujo who aren't Puella Magi, as she now knows they're unlikely to understand, and respond reasonably to it.

However, she's also certainly learned fear, and is afraid of fighting other Puella Magi above all else. As a Puella Magi scavenger she's also learned desperation, living from grief seed to grief seed off the rare and highly contested witches in neutral territory, what she might eventually do to survive? And once her survival is more secure, what will she decide she wants to achieve with her life?

Love of Plants:

Eri's original love of plants was born out of a desire for companionship. As a younger child she delighted in their simple beauty, and loved raising them. As a lonely child, she often spoke to them and confessed her feelings, because they were non-judgmental, good listeners. As she grew older, this simple love developed into a desire to learn all she could about them. She imagined plants as selfless beings, who give so much to everyone and expect little in return.

Her life as a Puella Magi has changed that somewhat, as she's adopted a more pragmatic view. Now she realizes that they're just as selfish as they are selfless. After all, don't they all compete for resources where some survive and others die? It's something she considers often, and relates to her own personal situation.

Relationships

(Revamping, returning /some day/!)

Magical Abilities

Puella Magi Weapon: Eri's weapon is a thorned vine scourge, which is versatile in how it might be used. Besides being able to crack the whip with bone-snapping force, she can also actively control it's movements, and increase the whip's size and mass. She can also imbue the thorns with poison, or cause them to grow to the size of javelins, which she can snap off and fling.

Phytokinesis: Able to manifest and control the plants she creates anywhere, this works best if her manifestations are kept brief. Typically these plants are used as bludgeons or stabbing weapons within the environment, meant to create traps for people. Minor control and alteration of non-magical plants she doesn't create is possible, but it creates a monstrous drain on her magic, thus she doesn't do it all that often.

Magical Healing: Like all Puella Magi, Eri possesses magical healing. For herself, she has the unusual limitation of having to heal herself in direct sunlight, as if she were some sort of human plant. The healing of others might be possible, as it's a common trait to Puella Magi, but she hasn't yet tried it.

Non-Magical Abilities

Botanophile: Eri loves learning everything she can about botany, floriculture, arboriculture, and gardening which requires knowledge from a variety of sciences. This doesn't mean she has a wide breadth of knowledge from the other sciences though, even though she does in relation to plants and botany. While she was once an active member of Ohtori's Gardening Club, she's been missing more and more club activities of late.

Swim Team: While Eri is on Ohtori's swim team, and quite talented as a swimmer, particularly in the butterfly stroke she's been skipping practice as of late. How long will she be kept on the team given that?

Artist: Eri draws as a hobby, and is quite talented at it. As an artist, she has her quirks, and self-imposed barriers. One of which is that she doesn't believe she can draw people well or capture the emotion.
