A kitten in the brilliant copse of a brier patch.

No.

No, that's not right.

Certainly there is the size to it - to be dwarfed by things which have grown for unfathomable years. Certainly, the shape to it. Here it twists about itself like a coiled fern; there it curls upon the ground like hungry roots.

Hungry... hungry...

Ah, yes.

There is hunger in this place. Prick the skin about its thorns and it beads like jewels.

Is there comfort, to the brier patch? Oh, there's nothing but the shape of vines here. They cling about the feet and curl upwards; they are inexorable.

They are obsidian.

Call out. Call out! There is nothing here but emptiness. Volcanic ash like powder which sets about the world a deathly pall. Is there a name on those lips? Can there be a name, in this place?

Is there anyone who would call to mind this place?

There is no one, darling, but the darkness.

There is no one by that name here.

That name will not help now.

That name never could.

Reach out to the vines, the thorns; they are black glass and they shatter at a touch. Oh, there is power here, in these hands. Strength enough to rend the thicket whole. Tear and shred. Gardening.

A kitten in the tattered corpse of a brier patch.

And oh, how the jagged edges bite, to cut anyone who ventures close.

After all, obsidian can only carve away with sharp edges...

...

Mikoto stirs against Mai's side, with a quiet noise soon stifled by her friend's half-asleep mumbling.

The black glass dreams are rare, these days, and this one felt especially bad. She has to wonder why. It only lasts for a few moments. The dream slips away, as dreams do, to a sense of disquietude and uneasiness. Those lingering memories of darkness could be anything - perhaps the black of Fallen Stern's blade. She has had those nightmares before. But why now? Mai is right here.

Perhaps it's because they just escaped the dreams of that Book called Reinforce. It would make sense. Dreams beget dreams. She hopes it won't last. Mikoto does not like dreaming. It's unsettling to forget. It's even more uncomfortable when she remembers.

For some reason she thinks of Eri, and anxiety floods her heart as she realises she's forgotten something. She must have forgotten, for in this moment it feels the most important thing. As if there were something she wanted to do, something she'd worried about for so long. Some idea, some shred of hope -

But Mai's presence is warm and reassuring, and Mikoto realises she must have just forgotten something in the dream.

Eri will be fine.

Did you really think you could learn enough, change enough to help her? Impossible. A tool cannot exceed its purpose. Destroy for her, Mikoto, until it destroys her. Women who ask too many questions are so troublesome...
