Title: LOTUS AWAKENING: Mai Tokiha
Summary:

Mai wakes up after a terrible dream. Fortunately, it was just a dream, and she's safe at home.

Who:

Mai Tokiha

Where:

Chofu Suburban District

OOC - IC Date:

2018-06-12 - April 25th, 2015

In the sky, a rift of absolute darkness yawns open, surpassing the darkest night. The air is steeped with death, despair pervading every breath. There's a terrible grinding before, a terrible rushing behind.

There was a tree, once, that rumours said held up the very world itself. A beacon, an anchor, a life that everyone could rely upon...but that life is over. Branches wither and crack, as the rushing grows louder.

The abyss roars, swirls, devoured itself by a terrible tome. A woman standing in the air, looking down at it with resignation and sorrow, mouth moving with words that can't be heard over that rushing sound.

It hits all at once, like a storm, like a raging river, sweeping over and through and engulfing everything, and there's no one left to help, no one to save-

It's a reaction she comes to regret almost immediately. The morning sunlight through her window is horribly bright, shining with the promise of a new day. For a teenage girl who had planned to relish the laziness of a Sunday morning, however, it is a cruel interruption indeed. Holding one hand over her eyes, she moves to pull the covers back over her head for just five more minutes.

Unfortunately, her troubled sleep has posed an obstacle, in that her comforter is horribly entwined around her legs. It takes longer in her sleep-deprived state than she'd like to finally get it straightened out, and by the time she's done she might as well sit up. A little more sleep would be nice, but-

Thud. Thump thump thump thump thump. Slam. The sounds of footsteps in the hallway, racing down the stairs, and exiting the front door in haste are loud enough that the whole house must have heard them...and Mai can't help but smirk to herself. "I guess Takumi's running late. Hope he gets to that 'important' game of his on time..."

There's a curious crooning from behind her, and Mai turns to see just what it was. There's a nice red-and-jade sheet covering a cage there, one that's steadily being lifted. With a sigh, she swings her feet off the bed, tucking them into her slippers, and pads over to lift the cover fully. The pearl cockatiel within tilts its head as if to take in Mai's pyjama-clad state, and it croons again.

"You and those whale songs, I swear, Kags. It's fine. ...it's fine." Closing her eyes for an instant brings back a vision of darkness and death, and she opens them again hastily. White feathers and an imploring gaze meet her eyes, and the teenager concedes defeat. "I'll...get you your breakfast in a minute, okay?"

Her answer is a trilling chirp, which is as close to acknowledgement as she's going to accept right now. However late she slept, though, it still feels early...or feels like she hasn't slept enough. She takes a moment to tidy the stuffed animals lining the ledge by her bed, straightening up the little black cat and cheerful-looking flower. "...Kind of feel like I should separate you two...weird."

She can leave well enough alone, anyway. There's things to do besides sleep, in theory. Pick out some nice clothes for the day, for one - no need to worry about finding something to match her uniform's red jacket and vest today, after all. Before that she needs to figure out what she did with the bird food after getting home yesterday...what in the world was she thinking?

Abruptly, there's a knock at the door frame, and the doorframe opens a crack to admit an inquisitive face. "Well, he's finally off...how about you, Mai? You might not have classes today, but don't think that I'm just going to let you sleep the whole day away!"

Mai turns in surprise, staring at the intruder for a moment. Taller than her, dressed in a sensible blouse and skirt, sporting a long ponytail in a shade of reddish-brown not quite as vibrant as Mai's own hair - but the sight doesn't last long before Mai rushes forward. For a moment, the urge is to expel the intrusion - but in a split second, the door is open and she's buried her face against the woman's shoulder, hugging tightly. "Oof! ...Mai-chan?"

"....sorry, Mom. I had a bad dream."
