The nominal leader of the Crystal Gems seems like she's always been in
charge, but in reality she's still struggling not to drown beneath the new
order of things. This is hard to suss out, however, because Garnet projects
cool confidence, paired with quiet but fierce passion for her duties to
humanity in general and Steven Universe in particular. Also, paired with
uncannily well timed straight-line delivery. It's often impossible to tell
whether she's being deliberately humorous or obliviously so, but where she
goes, calm and order tend to follow, and she has a knack for being at the
right place at just the right time. She is distinctly yet unremarkably
inhuman, impossibly tall and routinely capable of massive feats of strength
and endurance. But it's only when she summons her massive gauntlets that
she's truly prepared to throw down, and she does so with a sinuous fusion of
brutality and grace. Though often irritable in a heavy hangs the head
beneath the crown sort of way, Garnet truly furious is a rare sight -- only
a few things can make her really lose her cool.

The essence of the dish is the interplay between these crucial ingredients:

Cram them together and that's it, you're done. Thanks for coming by!

Well there's more to it than that. Adobo is primarily the domain of home cooks, so the ratios of the ingredients vary widely by the recipe and taste preferences of the chef and their families. Some use garlic cloves in the double digits, some call for a higher soy sauce and vinegar ratio to water. Some use a lot of water or stock. Some barely use water at all. Some add a sugar, or some onion etc. etc.

Traditionally Adobo is a meat dish made with either Pork or Chicken, but it can be made with just about any protein you'd like. Beef, mushrooms, eggplant and water spinach are all popular. Duck and quail would also work well. <br>
Meats can be cooked with or without bones. Cooking with bones will lend their flavor to the broth.

Browning can be done before or after braising. Traditionally it was after. Most recipes now suggest before. The difference is whether the browning flavors get added to the braising sauce.

Generally: The vinegar and soy sauce are in a 1:1 ratio, but that can be tweaked to taste. The amount of water or stock used is not tied to this. The broth can be thickened with a roux if desired. <br>Some recipes serve in-broth like a roast, others call to drain the liquid, brown the rest then re-add or serve sauce on the side.

It is usually served with white rice, but can be served with other starches. I prefer French bread especially for meat-based Adobo.

Bay leaves are removed after cooking, as per usual.

Pepper is not optional, it shouldn't overpower the dish but its contribution is essential to the flavor balance.

6. Serve with white rice, or toasted French bread (my preference). <br>

I find that pork adobo in particular tastes like a variation on a vinegar-based barbecue sauce, so you can easily eat it like you would pulled pork.

- ½ cup vegetable oil or more as needed <br>
- ⅓ cup white or rice vinegar <br>
- ¼ cup soy sauce <br>

- 1 tsp sugar <br>

1. Prepare the eggplants by cutting in half lengthwise and then cutting each half into 2-inch pieces. <br>
2. Heat vegetable oil on wok or non-stick frying pan. Fry eggplants in batches until brown on both sides, adding more oil as needed. Drain on paper towels and set aside. <br>
3. Pour off excess oil from pan. Add vinegar, soy sauce, ground pepper, garlic and sugar to the pan; bring to a boil. <br>
4. Add fried eggplants, lower the heat to medium, cover and cook for 2-3 minutes or until eggplants are soft. <br>
5. Gently stir to coat eggplants with the sauce. Turn off the heat and leave the covered pan on the stove for couple more minutes (the eggplants will continue cooking). Transfer to a serving plate. <br>

A personal favorite from the recipe archives of Vincent Price which he himself adapted from a dish served at the Four Seasons hotel. Vichyssoise is a thick soup made of boiled and puréed leeks, onions, potatoes, cream, and chicken stock. Its origin seems to be a simple French country dish that was later adapted and served by French chefs working in American hotels in the early to mid 20th century. This preparation adds the sweetness and color of carrots to the classic formula.

====Ingredients====
* 2 cups chopped, peeled white or red potatoes
* 1 leek, white/light green part only, sliced
* 1 1/4 cups sliced carrots
* 3 cups vegetable or chicken broth, stock or bouillon (Chicken is classical/original, but veg can be used)
* 1 teaspoon salt
* Dash of white pepper
* 1 cup heavy cream

In a large soup pot over medium heat, add potatoes, leek, carrots, and vegetable or chicken broth. <br>
Increase heat and bring just to a boil. <br>
Reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 25 to 30 minutes or until vegetables are tender. <br>
Remove from heat and let cool 10 to 15 minutes. <br>
Mash to desired consistency with a spoon or masher or put in a food processor/blender and puree until smooth. <br>

(This is a matter of personal preference. Traditionally Vichyssoise is pureed until smooth, but I prefer it mashed apart for a more minced-chowder type consistency. Both result in a thick, creamy soup, it's a matter of what kind of texture you prefer, I like it a bit less uniformly smooth, and with mashing that's what you get.)

The soup can be made 1 to 2 days in advance up until this stage. Refrigerate until ready to finish. It can also be frozen here and saved for a later date.

To serve, stir in white pepper, salt, and cream.

Can be eaten cold or hot, but I prefer slightly warm. Serves 4 to 6 but scales easily.

Carnitas is a Mexican pork dish popular in burritos and tacos and on nachos and anywhere pork can be used in Mexican or Tex-Mex cooking. Traditionally, its signature flavor is imparted by being deep fried in a pot of lard that is reused through several cooks throughout the day and flavors each batch. However, there is a good method to make it at home without that much trouble. I don't generally measure the spices for this recipe, I'll assume you have some basic familiarity working with spices and knowing when something is too much, but I've provided rough guidelines. Use your best judgement.

====Ingredients====
* 2 to 3lb pork shoulder roast
* A flavor neutral cooking oil with a smoke point above 275. (I use peanut but olive, canola, avocado etc. will work)
* salt & pepper (salt - generous, pepper - a little bit goes a long way)
* garlic powder or dried garlic (generous)
* dried onion (generous)
* dried oregano (some)
* ground cumin (a little bit goes a long way) (of all the spices here, this one is the easiest to overdo,)
* chipotle powder (some)
* dried valencia orange peel (a little bit goes a long way)
* small amount of lime juice (1 tsp or so)
* ancho or guajillo chili powder (a little bit goes a long way)

====Instructions====

Preheat your oven to 275 degrees Fahrenheit. <br>
Dice the pork into one to two inch cubes. Do not trim the fat first. <br>
Gauging the amount of pork you end up with, place it in a casserole dish that will allow you to just barely hold it one layer. Some recipes want you not to crowd dishes or pans, with this recipe, that's exactly what you're trying to do. The idea is, that as the pork releases its fat, it will fry in it since the fat will have no place to go but to pack itself around the meat. The reason dry ingredients are used for staples like onions and garlic is to limit the water released by the cooking process so the fat can do its thing unimpeded. <br>
Add your spices and lime juice in any order you'd like, and mix them evenly through the meat. (hands or utensil) <br>
Add a small amount of the cooking oil, enough to lightly coat the top of the pork. You're not frying the pork in the oil, the pork has enough fat to do that own, the idea is to create a hydrophobic layer on top to help seal it all in. <br>
Cover the casserole dish with aluminum foil and place in preheated oven <br>
Let cook at 275 for 3 hours. <br>

Remove, let cool enough to handle. <br>
Shred with a fork,

Before serving, move serving to a broiler-safe surface (like a baking sheet) and put under the broiler waiting and mixing up until crisp. <br> Unused portions can be refrigerated for three days or frozen for several months. <br>
In my experience this dish is flavorful enough that it can be eaten with nothing else, but it can be used in whatever Mexican or Tex Mex dishes you can devise and eaten alongside most sides.

The nominal leader of the Crystal Gems seems like she's always been in
charge, but in reality she's still struggling not to drown beneath the new
order of things. This is hard to suss out, however, because Garnet projects
cool confidence, paired with quiet but fierce passion for her duties to
humanity in general and Steven Universe in particular. Also, paired with
uncannily well timed straight-line delivery. It's often impossible to tell
whether she's being deliberately humorous or obliviously so, but where she
goes, calm and order tend to follow, and she has a knack for being at the
right place at just the right time. She is distinctly yet unremarkably
inhuman, impossibly tall and routinely capable of massive feats of strength
and endurance. But it's only when she summons her massive gauntlets that
she's truly prepared to throw down, and she does so with a sinuous fusion of
brutality and grace. Though often irritable in a heavy hangs the head
beneath the crown sort of way, Garnet truly furious is a rare sight -- only
a few things can make her really lose her cool.

These tinctures generally run the gamut between harmless toy spells to major problems for anyone involved. Generally they keep with her Wicked Witch motif, and usually transmute their target in some way, changing a part of them, a body part size, or makeup, skin color, vitalizing something, such as causing a wooden object to grow like a living plant etc or animating an animal shaped plush toy. They can be as minor as turning someone's hair into cotton balls or making their school bag bark like a dog, or animating coin-purses to collect flowers, or as major as turning someone in a ghost, melting a minor minotaur, accidentally growing a mushroom youma or creating an overflowing beaker of never-ending shiitake saltwater taffy.

|Sucy's dream is to pursue her interests to the fullest, – to catalog and brew all sorts of potion experiments and reagents the likes of which the world has never seen! She does have some lesser goals: She wants to collect as many books and texts of her favorite arts and magics as she can, and to fill in the blanks with her own research and experimentation. She's also worried about modernization in her homeland: Siquijor is becoming a hot tourist destination in recent years, and progress is marching towards her doorstep. She wants to be able to inherit the family home as a living property holder so that it can't be demolished. She also wants to take it a bit further and grow a magical mushroom forest around her home that only guides through the people she wants to interact with, letting all others be lost, so impenetrable that no one can knock it down in case builders try to seize the property by force.

|Sucy enjoys sneaking off to mountains and forests on her broom to collect mushrooms and herbs by herself, but for all her oddity and fungal fixations, she has normal girl interests too, she's fond of sweets, movies and goofing off, napping and doing nothing when she can get away with it. She's also been seen practicing yoga, likely seeking to commune with Prana state that is the consciousness of plants and mushrooms.

|When it comes to school, Sucy is talented, but lazy. Not motivated enough to show off the heights of excellence that make Diana a program darling, Sucy is nonetheless able to perform and learn adequately as possible (particularly magic) while expending little effort. She coasts on her solo work and study, and her marks in subjects of her pet interests are spectacular, which helps offset that her group work tends to suffer (if not end in disaster) when paired with the usual suspects. Her feelings about school are complicated. She's more interested in staying once she learned that Infinity has a collection of rare mushrooms and flora she might be able to study. She also loved her first occult magic and potions classes. Still, she finds the general school experience and several subjects to be boring, and would much rather pursue her own research, or goof off with her new friends.

|Socially, Sucy is not very outgoing to new people and strangers. Her countenance and appearance can be unnerving to those who don't know her, (which is definitely something she enjoys at times), but her reclusiveness is not actually that unusual, in her culture, emotional expression in front of strangers and those you don't know well is discouraged from a young age. She is instead a master of understated subtlety, when she interacts with others, she seems to stay in one place, but when she chooses, affects the world around her in hidden ways, her influence all but invisible until it's too late. Sucy is not mute, but blunt and straight to the point when speaking, sometimes to the point of unintended rudeness. The young witch does tend to find herself in the company of people who are heavily extroverted, and willing to interject themselves into her life, and she's slowly but surely learning to enjoy the company of those around her.

|Sucy is an alchemical prodigy whose skill at potion and poison-making is far above a student witch of her grade. These tinctures generally run the gamut between harmless toy spells to major problems for anyone involved. Generally they keep with her Wicked Witch motif, and usually transmute their target in some way, changing a part of them, a body part size, or makeup, skin color, vitalizing something, such as causing a wooden object to grow like a living plant etc or animating an animal shaped plush toy. They can be as minor as turning someone's hair into cotton balls or making their school bag bark like a dog, or animating coin-purses to collect flowers, or as major as turning someone in a ghost, melting a minor minotaur, accidentally growing a mushroom youma or creating an overflowing beaker of never-ending shiitake saltwater taffy.

|Sucy's dream is to pursue her interests to the fullest, – to catalog and brew all sorts of potion experiments and reagents the likes of which the world has never seen! She does have some lesser goals: She wants to collect as many books and texts of her favorite arts and magics as she can, and to fill in the blanks with her own research and experimentation. She's also worried about modernization in her homeland: Siquijor is becoming a hot tourist destination in recent years, and progress is marching towards her doorstep. She wants to be able to inherit the family home as a living property holder so that it can't be demolished. She also wants to take it a bit further and grow a magical mushroom forest around her home that only guides through the people she wants to interact with, letting all others be lost, so impenetrable that no one can knock it down in case builders try to seize the property by force.

|Sucy enjoys sneaking off to mountains and forests on her broom to collect mushrooms and herbs by herself, but for all her oddity and fungal fixations, she has normal girl interests too, she's fond of sweets, movies and goofing off, napping and doing nothing when she can get away with it. She's also been seen practicing yoga, likely seeking to commune with Prana state that is the consciousness of plants and mushrooms.

|When it comes to school, Sucy is talented, but lazy. Not motivated enough to show off the heights of excellence that make Diana a program darling, Sucy is nonetheless able to perform and learn adequately as possible (particularly magic) while expending little effort. She coasts on her solo work and study, and her marks in subjects of her pet interests are spectacular, which helps offset that her group work tends to suffer (if not end in disaster) when paired with the usual suspects. Her feelings about school are complicated. She's more interested in staying once she learned that Infinity has a collection of rare mushrooms and flora she might be able to study. She also loved her first occult magic and potions classes. Still, she finds the general school experience and several subjects to be boring, and would much rather pursue her own research, or goof off with her new friends.

Oh boy! Another gem mission! A bit of stellar vision revealed a troubling corrupted gem monster roaming about an old Gem site, and it was time to help it find some peace instead of causing havoc. It was a rather open and shut case! Some teamwork was involved, possibly a snappy comeback or two among those participating in the rodeo of sorts, and the being was successfully bubbled.

There was one problem though. About five minutes after leaving the local Warp pad, Steven has had a /severe/ allergic reaction to whatever flower was blooming in droves in the area. His face was flushed, his nose was running like a spigot, and his eyes were watery and irritated. It was... pretty bad. Bad enough to mostly keep him from fighting, and even struggling to keep up when heading home.

"Wait up... you guys!" he says, doing his best to keep up. He knew it would go away on returning home and having a cup of hot tea or something similar, but for now. It was just awful.

Darn you, shrubbery!

A gleam of light, star-bearing gauntlets meet the fangs of... something... a hulking creature that resembles an earth spider.. except...

The legs are wrong. The eyes are wrong. The way it moves, the way it sounds, everything about it has an alien otherness that extends to even the way it interacts with the light around it. It doesn't look like a black object, but rather a piece of blackness itself. If it were to step into a patch of shadow, it might disappear completely save for a ghostly white swirl that flows across it like a mist ebbing beneath its "skin".

This seething darkness on the spindle legs of a widow rushes is first unbalanced by a shove and haymaker from the Leader of the Crystal Gems, then is finished by a pair of a softly glowing spears the color of fallen snow that pierce through its darkness for good.

It explodes out in a black miasma, and leaves behind an odd black stone with chaotic white threads across its surface. The stone is picked up, bubbled and sent away, and the battle becomes a memory.

Abruptly a memory, as the sneezing of a very special boy grabs the attention of his caretakers.

They offer him their hands and walk with him onto a circle of cut and polished stone, before a column of light erupts upwards from the disc and they all vanish.

Steven can only be heard sniffling as he approaches the Warp pad. "Sorry I wasn't more help..." he says, though distorted due to a stuffy nose. The boy lets out a loud sneeze, accidentally catching Garnet with it. "Sorry... Garnet..."

He joins the mothers three on the Warp pad as it whisks them off toward home.

The Warp stream never got old for Steven. A scintillating pattern of geometric lighting surrounded them, somehow transporting them across vast distances in mere minutes. He always wondered where all those pads went!

A rather large sneeze comes about, and while he tries to hold it back, he is unable to, and the sneeze, surprisingly propels him in the stream of light! Out to the point of the edge of Warp! His head accidentally pokes out.

What he sees is indescribable. A swirling vortex of clouds and stars and objects foreign, as energy plays across the entire horizon, and lightning strikes scour the far off reaches of what seems to be a void. Other warp streams in the distance go their own paths, as if some sort of network of roads in a city.

The atmosphere outside is hostile. Little to no oxygen is present, and just tries to take his breath away. It is colder than anything he has felt yet. His runny nose freezes in seconds. His eyes hurt and is forced to squint. But, despite all this... he sees something. An object, flying through one of the closer warp columns.

But that made no sense. Aren't the Crystal Gems the only ones capable of using the Warp?! Before he is able to try and discern what it is, he founds himself yanked back inside of the Warp stream.

The yank is Pearl's. An elegant ivory hand grabs Steven and pulls him back into the pillar of light!

"Careful! It's dangerous to stick your head out of the stream!!" scolds its owner, a look of panic quickly hidden by one of "for your own good" disciplinary parental concern.

"Pearl is right. There's not much air, and it's /very/ cold." Garnet offers in support, and bends down to flick the icicles out from under Steven's nose.

The sudden displacement back into the Warp surprises Steven, but is very welcome. He wasn't sure how he would make it back in on his own! There wasn't anything to push off of. He hears what the others are saying, but his mind is rushing from what he saw, and not the beautiful sight of whatever the Warp zone would be called. Actually, Warp Zone sounds cool. But that can wait!

His nose twitches as the icicles are removed from his nose, and then anxiously lets everyone know! "Guys! I saw something out there!" This could be a problem. Imagine if other things were warping around the world! "It was warping! I dunno where, but I know I saw it!"

If anything, that sudden absolute zero contact he still seems to be reeling from, but he should be okay.

Pearl and Garnet's advice, while not responded to, will definitely be remembered. Probably wouldn't be good to get stuck out there!

Garnet and Pearl look at each other for a brief moment but don't speak. Pearl looks confused, but is the first to turn back and reply:

"Steven, that's just not possible. Is your vision blurry from the pollen?"

She looks at him with an expression of gentle concern, with only the slightest drop of dismissive pomposity.

They don't believe him.

He can understand some of their skepticism, but he doesn't lie! Well, very much. Not enough for this though. "I-I can see just fine..." he states abruptly, then squints to see who it was talking. His eyes are really messed up right now. "...Pearl!" Had to make sure it was her.

Maybe he was seeing things? No, he is doubting himself now. That was definitely a thing flying through warp. It looked vaguely round, whatever it was.

And there is a Warp pad right in their house! What if it showed up?! Was it good or bad? Did it want something? Oh man...

"There's nothing out there Steven. There hasn't been anything else for a long, long time." Garnet interjects calmly.

The light of the warp around them fades, and they are home.

Steven can already tell tonight will be a long night. Preparation for bed goes off without a hitch, and the boy dons his pajamas and performs hygienics just as any other night. He goes to bed.

Sleep never comes. The thought of something using Warp to get in the house is too great. Every time he thinks he hears something, or the house slightly shifts, his eyes shoot open to check the Warp pad.

This goes on for hours. It is excruciating. A rumbling comes from his stomach. In his distracted daze from both worry and pollen, he forgot to eat. "Might as well," he says quietly to himself. He isn't getting any sleep anyway.

The boy creeps to the fridge to find something to eat. There is some macaroni mix beside it, and some containers of cheese-- Wait.

There are some EMPTY containers of cheese sauce in the fridge. Thanks /Amethyst/. With nothing else that seems quick, he begins to gather the ingredients to make macaroni. Just macaroni.

A door opens and closes while Steven works.

When Steven looks away from the fridge, Garnet is standing at the breakfast bar holding a plastic shopping bag with a package of instant cheese sauce poking out of the side.

"I thought you might need some more." and she offers it to him.

"It's going to be okay Steven."

"There can't be anything out there besides us. We're the only ones on Earth who can use the warp pads."

Saying nothing more, she leans against the bar, and observes his Cooking Club skills in action.

A few ingredients begin to assemble on the stove, as Steve readies to make him some mac and... macaroni. It doesn't even occur to him that someone has shown up without his knowledge. "AHHH!" he lets out and shrinks against the stove for a moment. "G-Garnet!" he says in that tone coming from a boy that hasn't had enough sleep. Bags are under his eyes from stress.

"Th... Thanks," he says, accepting the bag of cheese sauce. At least he can have normal mac n' cheese now. He begins to make the dish. Indeed, his cooking skills are improving. He adds a touch of cumin to the sauce. He has found that cumin is really good when added to some dishes!

"Sorry. I can't sleep." Eyes drift to the Warp pad. A loaded squirt gun rests on the counter near Garnet. Not that it would do much of anything in actuality to whatever came through Warp if it existed, but perhaps it provides some comfort to the boy.

Though with Garnet around, he does feel better. Even if she doesn't believe him.

Garnet watches Steven cook. She doesn't know what more she can say to him.

"Nothing on Earth can go through the Warp without one of the Gems." she pauses, then continues: "I'd stay up with you, but I have another mission... Eat your macaroni and get to bed soon." Garnet gives him a small smile. ruffles his hair.

"All that sneezing looked exhausting."

She steps into the warp pad and beams away, leaving the rest of the house, and the warp pad, still and silent as the last of its activation tones fade.

It doesn't take long before the macaroni and cheese is done. The smell of the hearty snack wafts through the livign area, and brings a little comfort to Steven. He knows he saw something, but the Gems are sure nothing can use them. It is hard to explain it to him, but his gut tells him he was correct in what he saw.

It is... unnerving.

"Okay, Garnet. Stay safe," he says kindly towards his caretaker. "Heh, it was. It was." A bite to test the meal goes well, and the boy begins to eat as Garnet leaves. But watching her go makes him twitch when the Warp activates.

The boy finishes his meal, and stares at that device. "Know what?" he says to himself. "If they don't believe me, I think it is time I investigate myself!" he says, holding the spoon high. "Well... maybe with a little help."

Oh boy! Another gem mission! A bit of stellar vision revealed a troubling corrupted gem monster roaming about an old Gem site, and it was time to help it find some peace instead of causing havoc. It was a rather open and shut case! Some teamwork was involved, possibly a snappy comeback or two among those participating in the rodeo of sorts, and the being was successfully bubbled.

There was one problem though. About five minutes after leaving the local Warp pad, Steven has had a /severe/ allergic reaction to whatever flower was blooming in droves in the area. His face was flushed, his nose was running like a spigot, and his eyes were watery and irritated. It was... pretty bad. Bad enough to mostly keep him from fighting, and even struggling to keep up when heading home.

"Wait up... you guys!" he says, doing his best to keep up. He knew it would go away on returning home and having a cup of hot tea or something similar, but for now. It was just awful.

Darn you, shrubbery!

A gleam of light, star-bearing gauntlets meet the fangs of... something... a hulking creature that resembles an earth spider.. except...

The legs are wrong. The eyes are wrong. The way it moves, the way it sounds, everything about it has an alien otherness that extends to even the way it interacts with the light around it. It doesn't look like a black object, but rather a piece of blackness itself. If it were to step into a patch of shadow, it might disappear completely save for a ghostly white swirl that flows across it like a mist ebbing beneath its "skin".

This seething darkness on the spindle legs of a widow rushes is first unbalanced by a shove and haymaker from the Leader of the Crystal Gems, then is finished by a pair of a softly glowing spears the color of fallen snow that pierce through its darkness for good.

It explodes out in a black miasma, and leaves behind an odd black stone with chaotic white threads across its surface. The stone is picked up, bubbled and sent away, and the battle becomes a memory.

Abruptly a memory, as the sneezing of a very special boy grabs the attention of his caretakers.

They offer him their hands and walk with him onto a circle of cut and polished stone, before a column of light erupts upwards from the disc and they all vanish.

Steven can only be heard sniffling as he approaches the Warp pad. "Sorry I wasn't more help..." he says, though distorted due to a stuffy nose. The boy lets out a loud sneeze, accidentally catching Garnet with it. "Sorry... Garnet..."

He joins the mothers three on the Warp pad as it whisks them off toward home.

The Warp stream never got old for Steven. A scintillating pattern of geometric lighting surrounded them, somehow transporting them across vast distances in mere minutes. He always wondered where all those pads went!

A rather large sneeze comes about, and while he tries to hold it back, he is unable to, and the sneeze, surprisingly propels him in the stream of light! Out to the point of the edge of Warp! His head accidentally pokes out.

What he sees is indescribable. A swirling vortex of clouds and stars and objects foreign, as energy plays across the entire horizon, and lightning strikes scour the far off reaches of what seems to be a void. Other warp streams in the distance go their own paths, as if some sort of network of roads in a city.
