Joy and happiness have their realms - so too does sorrow, a far-away Sea of Tears where great rocky shores weather eternally the endless storms that surround them, where strange creatures and stranger peoples live and love, in their way. This land is ruled by a queen - a descendant of the Mother of Sorrows, the patroness of this realm since time immemorial! And soon a new one will be chosen from among the Sirens - young women from this ancient bloodline called back to their haunting, ancestral home and given gifts by the Mother; sent out to "gather the sorrows of the world"... in whatever form they choose, and under their benefactor's mysterious eye.

The Sea of Tears is an alternate magical world. It is said, and may be literally true, that every shed tear finds its way to the Sea, which would explain why it is full of saltwater. The Sea is an inhospitable place to most life from Earth, but home to the Mother of Sorrow's many descendants. (She has taken lovers but never wed, and, of course, her descendants have themselves begun families.)

Those descendants are found throughout the world, a recurring thread in the tapestry of humanity. Touched as they are by sorrow, many have trouble living in the mortal world, but the Mother of Sorrows has granted them a boon: any of her descendants who should sail or swim into the water, with tears in their eyes and no thought for their paths, may find a way to the Sea of Tears, where houses have been prepared for them. These houses are not luxurious (save for those held by the queens); simple but comfortable furnishings, decorated by flotsam and jetsam. There is enough to eat, and peace, and others when you want them. It is a mercy and a blessing to many who come here.

Society, such as it is, is ruled by common agreement: luxury and ostentation rests upon the Queen, who is a lifetime appointment. (Little do at least one of the Sirens suspect that this role is more of a town mayor than a position of dominance and authority, but then, that is perhaps what they must learn.)

The Mother of Sorrows is herself an enigmatic figure, but not a wicked one. She appears typically as a mature but not elderly woman, and at times walks abroad in other worlds. Sorrow is inevitable, even in the most happy of places, and its full expression - from its creation, to its experience, to its resolution - is her business.

The Mother of Sorrows has no stated opinion on the matter, and does not interfere in their contests, save to collect the vanquished to herself: if she doesn't let them mess up, how will they ever learn?

Some wish to gather the sorrows as a bystander, interfering not with the natural order of things. The more opportunistic could create a great deal of sorrow and reap the rewards, placing them leagues ahead of their more altruistic counterparts.

The Mother's instructions and orders to her distant daughters are few, though this does not mean she is distant towards them emotionally, or unpleasant to talk to. If a brief explanation of their potential true place in the world is understood and accepted with their whole heart, one of these descendants is granted a Black Mirror and a vague instruction to gather sorrow, with the potential to one day be Queen. The method, the ramifications, and almost everything else are left up to the Siren to determine.

==Profile==
Nori Ankou: a mystery, a myth, a legend, a schoolgirl. Mostly the latter. Hailing from the northern shores of Sapporo, Nori's family is new money, and it shows in her bossy, bombastic demeanor. Those few who grow close to her glimpse something else beneath that surface, a looking-away from inner pain... Or perhaps they sense her descent from the dark bloodlines of the Mother of Sorrows, and her secret identity as 'La Sirene du Nord,' the future queen of the Sea of Tears! (Well, don't tell her cousin that.) Dedicated to collecting the world's sorrows by any means necessary, La Sirene du Nord does not let herself stop to wonder at the futility of this task.

==History==
Nori Ankou was a child with problems. No, they were not problems of misbehavior or foolishness; she was insightful and intelligent, an early reader and a thoughtful person. Her problem was much simpler: She had regular and frequent storms of a crippling, intractable depression. Even in an ideal situation this might have been less than positive. As it was, she was largely subject to displeasure from her parents, who had hoped for something more outgoing in a daughter... someone who could live up to the family's habits of being outgoing, go-getters, even a little ruthless at times. This disapproval didn't come with beatings, it just was an atmosphere of cold isolation.

Nori learned to fake it. It was an amazing power. Her parents, evidently relieved at the sudden brashness and outgoing nature of their child, didn't question too much that she still spent lots of time alone, by herself. ("I need to think!" "I'm tired of seeing other people!" "Other people are dumb, gosh!!") After all, at school, when she wasn't having a fit, she was fine. It was a relief to those parents, especially when they had a second child on their way - a son, too! Nori did not really like faking it, but it did, initially at least, seem to work. She did feel better... somewhat better... sometimes... However, after years of doing this, she began to despise herself for her false face, while not being able to put it down for long. When her parents informed her that, in light of both her academic irregularity and her penchant for periodically kicking her peers in their pouty pastry-holes, she would be going to a boarding school for her middle school years, she broke down in tears.

That, too, wasn't unusual. They let her run off to the dockside boathouse near the ocean on their seaside estate where she hid. They did not expect that this time, she would take a rowboat - and begin travelling out, as far as she could, tears in her eyes. A storm rose. The boat hit a far shore. As rain pelted down on her, she looked up at a gray eminence: someone who had come and waited, holding a lantern. The woman kissed her brow, bore her up the craggy path to a sheltered lighthouse, and fed her a meal of fish. She introduced herself as the Mother of Sorrows, and told Nori that she was in a home that had been prepared for her long ago. She could stay - forever, if she wished - and would learn many mysteries, and things she had not known she missed. She was a child of the Mother, at whatever remove, and she was not the first to come, nor would she be the last.

Nori ate her supper, and then said, But I have to go back; I'm to attend school soon.

Do you mean that? the Mother asked her. You do not have to.

Nori was silent for a long time. The Mother waited; she poured tea, served a small cake for dessert. Nori answered, finally: I don't know.

The Mother smiled, and congratulated her for her honesty. Come back tomorrow, she said: Take the same boat. Come after breakfast, and stay the day.

Nori left; came back the next day; and here the two of them spoke at length. Nori's ears burned to hear the strange woman praise her for her strength and the force of her will. But I'm awful, Nori said. I decided to lie to everyone so that Mother and Father would not be sad. What's strong about that?

Because, the Mother said, you did not lie. You performed, and you have kept the knowledge of yourself. Such strong will is worthy of a Queen. Return to me on this day, next year, and we will speak again.

Nori went to Ohtori then, and forgot about that entire conversation. She nearly forgot - if she hadn't looked in her old journal, she would have thought it was a dream. But on that day, a clear and blue day, she snuck away from her parents as they cossetted her infant brother, and sailed out of sight of land. Had it been a dream? She thought so, but when she turned around, she found the Mother sitting there. The Mother told her something of the history of the Sea of Tears, and how in time the sorrows of the world came there; how her children had filled the Earth, mingling with the races of mortal man, but how in time they would feel weighed upon by the passage of time. Those who could return to the Sea found themselves growing into strange and wonderful new powers and potencies... but most, in the end, did not. The Mother taught Nori a charm then, and told her to use it, not from here, but at Ohtori, in thirteen months, no more and more less. That charm was to sail away from land, however accomplished, steering without sight and with tears in her eyes.

But... Nori thought Ohtori was great fun. Her feelings were lighter, though she still had dark and gloomy spells. She remembered what day it was when the news spoke of storms at sea and storms on land. She slipped off the school grounds, desperately taking a paddleboat; steering it away, trying to make headway against the surging waves. Futility and black depression lay upon her - and then she awoke in that familiar lighthouse, tucked into a warm if spartan bed. The Mother was there, and she was told then of her real purpose.

She could stay if she wished, as many others had, but she held the strength and the will to pursue the course needed. Become a Siren, the Mother said; gather the sorrows of the world and bring them here. In time, you will grow, and should you grow enough, you shall be Queen, as she who rules now under my watch grows old and weary of the task.

Nori accepted.

She was then told, of course, that she was not alone, but...

==Profile==
Mizuki tries to keep a smile on her face despite the tumult of her life, which has long since ceased veneers of normalcy. Having just relocated away from Osaka on the back of a messy parental breakup along with her little brother, she has only in the last month come to know of the eerie truth of her being: she is descended from inhabitants of a curious realm where the sea is, quite literally, made of tears. With understanding of this place and a sworn oath to the Mother of Sorrows who guards it, the soft-spoken Aleksandrova girl now commences her in-situ introduction to a world unseen by most: a place of fantastic, bottomless terror and boundless courage in equal parts alike. But Mizuki's own worth in this magical world is yet unproven. Her alter ego, La Sirene de l'Est, has but a ghostly notion of her purpose, with instructions from the Mother as ephemeral as the mists fleeing before the rising sun; gather people's tears, their sorrows, and return them to the Sea. This sounds rather dire, to her, and so she has put her own spin on it to make things seem more noble. Soon, she will learn that there is so much more out there worth protecting unrelated to this mission, and that most of it is worth the pain, the fear and the heartache of fighting even with a heart as soft as hers. It's hard, being a Magical Girl in a new place with no friends and no training. It's hard, and nobody understands.

==Current Status==
For Mizuki, life in Tokyo as both a transfer student and as a Siren have only just begun. Her placement and enrollment in classes at the Infinity Institute is complete, and she begins the lonely process of resettling into the halls that will see her grow and learn for the next four or more years. Her friends in Osaka become a distant, albeit warm glow in memory who occasionally flare with light and activity through the magic of social media and train trips. But they are not, and cannot be there all the time, anymore, and so she must make new ones. Expectations, however vague, loom before her like charcoal spires winding ever upwards into a stormy sky, bulging with the unshed tears her patron has ordered her to collect. Mizuki's interpretation of this fate is naive, yes, but in it she finds a gentle strength. For rather than stoking the icy flames of of grief and misery to wreathe around the hearts of otherwise normal and innocent people and then harvesting the bounty, the idealistic young Siren has reasoned that it is her duty to instead find those who are already consumed with such feelings, and choke the frigid fires at their source. The tears that run will be the sweetest ones of all, heavy with sorrow defeated, and nobody has to suffer for it.

These are the plans. Whether they survive impact with everyday life remains to be seen. The many complications include other Magical Girls and Youma vying for similar emotions for their own noble or nefarious ends, her own insecurities, her growing realization of the potential she holds to make something incredible of this life and the terrifying potential cost of doing so are all weights secured about her arms and legs as she treads water. It is hardly fair, no, but never once did the Mother say it would be.

[[Nori Ankou]] is someone Mizuki has only briefly met. Nori seemed even more quiet than herself, ostensibly disturbed by Mizu's noisy little brother and his friend in the confines of a ramen shop. She found the girl to be very haunting, though not unpleasant, but also thought Nori's creepy half-finished sentences about "you couldn't be..." and "are you...?" made her feel uncomfortable, like someone had already snooped her out for being some kind of magic freak. That said, she attends Ohtori, so she must be pretty amazing. Probably one of those misunderstood geniuses, right?
