Any rural ingenue looking to come to the big city and get swept away at
first sight would be well-advised to get off at Shibuya Station, where you
could fill a high school yearbook with the people teeming over a single
crosswalk, and a legion of ten-story department stores offer a choice so
broad it resembles existential crisis. Shinjuku might administrate Tokyo,
but Shibuya is its style capital. Its densest concentration of boutiques,
retailers, and restaurants is bound together by Shibuya Crossing, a bustling
pedestrian intersection resembling an even gaudier Times Square.

Within walking distance to Harajuku, Shibuya is less whimsical, and far
grander. Its most iconic symbol is the Shibuya 109 department store, a
cylindrical grey monolith famous even outside of Japan. Each floor of 109
has about a dozen shops, and with ten flights of escalator to ascend, it
doesn't take a mathematician to realize that even this single store can be a
lot to take in. But Shibuya too has its side streets and quirks, and it's
not hard to find a chic little cafe to rest in. Those who find themselves
energized instead have recourse to the night clubs that trade on Shibuya's
 stylish reptuation.

Shibuya Station has a humbler landmark as well. It was here that the loyal
dog Hachiko waited for his owner each day, even after the owner had long
since died. A bronze statue of Hachiko waits here still, a reminder that
 love and loyalty never die.

<Pose Tracker> Mikoto Minagi [Ohtori Academy (11)] has posed.

After being delivered home by Takeo, and Takeo naturally being invited to stay for dinner, well -

- Mikoto and Mai probably had to go grocery shopping soon anyway, so it's fine.

But there's a comment from the cashier as they go through the check-out, in that little Ohtori town, about how girls their age ought to be shopping in Shibuya at a time like this. And Mikoto, ever guided by her intuition, immediately decided this was the best possible idea.

(She has to search, but if there's anything which could tear her from her mission, it's spending time with Mai Tokiha. Besides, she can keep an eye out...)

That's how she ends up all but dragging Mai from the station, under the watchful bronze eyes of Hachiko - and what an interesting metaphor that is. It's a good thing she's got a hand on her wrist, in the Golden Week crowds. A girl as slight as Mikoto seems as though she could be picked up and swept away in the sea of people.

But Mikoto is pretty sure Mai wouldn't approve of the roof route, so ground-level it is. "Come on, Mai!"

<Pose Tracker> Mai Tokiha [Ohtori Academy (12)] has posed.

It's a simple matter of fact. The pantry is never full, per se - but a sensible person keeps enough on hand to be able to make a meal or two. In Mai's case, this means keeping enough on hand to make a meal for herself, Mikoto, and two to four wandering hungry magical boys/girls. So something as minor as a teenage boy wandering in doesn't ruin Mai's dinner plans...but it does mean that tonight's dinner was kind of in peril.

It's fine. The budget can handle it. ...the budget can kind of handle it, and omelette rice is a perfectly valid thing to make for a week straight when eggs are on sale. Totally. Sure, the chicken was sold out, and the green onions weren't worth buying, but it would be fine...

Up until that comment. Mai was just about to retort with a roll of the eyes when Mikoto started beaming, and then all this started happening. Barely, barely enough time to drop off the mini-mart's purchases at home, and then they were off to the station, and from there...

It's complete and utter chaos, Must be Saturday. It would normally take Mai a moment to get her bearings but it's a moment she doesn't have, barely able to keep from colliding with people as Mikoto pulls her along. A tiny part of her wishes she could just fly above the mess, but that might be too frivolous a use of power for even Mikoto - so through the crowd it is. After a few near-misses, she twists her hand to grab Mikoto's wrist to keep her grip secure. "I'm coming, I'm coming - is this really necessary?"

She'd say more, but Mikoto might feel a little more resistance to her pull as Mai's eyes catch sight of one store window. It's nothing particularly spectacular, really, but the display of festival kimonos is at least a little glamorous.

<Pose Tracker> Mikoto Minagi [Ohtori Academy (11)] has posed.

Mikoto made very sad noises about the chicken. She likes chicken. It has a flavour, no matter what anyone says.

They didn't last long, in her whirlwind of activity.

"Yup!" She chirps, cheerfully, in reply. Whether she even knows where she's going, in this crowd, is a matter of fierce scholastic debate. Does it matter? They'll find something. There's everything, in Shibuya.

There's people selling fine watches, and good-luck charms, and -

Mikoto's sense of touch is as finely-tuned as the rest of her senses, and she can feel the resistance, as if in response to her word. She pauses, follows Mai's gaze, and brightens. "Let's go there!"

It's an exclamation rather than a question, because Mikoto summarily weaves them through the crowd and in through the storefront. There are people here, too - but at least it's not as busy as the street, so Mikoto is able to release Mai's wrist without feeling like she's going to lose her in the hustle.

She goes to examine those kiminos, eyes wide. "So pretty!"

<Pose Tracker> Mai Tokiha [Ohtori Academy (12)] has posed.

"Wait, go - Mikoto I don't-" Mai tries to stop a force of nature with words, and it goes approximately as well as expected. Mercifully, as the pressure on her wrist relents - and she releases Mikoto's arm in kind - it's clear that this store isn't half as busy as the streets. A small mercy, perhaps, but a mercy all the same.

It's not just kimonos - a general-purpose clothing store has all manner of fashionable items ranging in price from 'reasonable' to 'the Ohtori student council thinks for half a second' - but the festival's in season, and traditional fashions are firmly on display. That's why there's a rush, and that's why some of those kimono displays are positively being mobbed.

There's some cute character-print designs, mostly in smaller sizes; there's some displays of elegance whose price tags make Mai cringe at the number of digits alone; there's some flashy options, there's some men's designs that frankly need to be getting mobbed more...Mai's eyes dart around, taking it all in, but she's stopped complaining for the moment at least.

Idly, she drifts over to one stack of clothes. Bright colours, sunny colours - the most prominent design yellow for the most part, with abstract streaks of red evoking thoughts of dancing fl...ower petals. "...decent fabric, and the price isn't too bad..." She muses aloud, then hangs her head with a sigh. "...but I've got one at home that works just fine."

Turquoise is fine. Honest.

Another thought strikes her, though, and she lifts her head to try to find Mikoto after her own wandering off. "Mikoto? I just realized - do you need new festival wear?"

<Pose Tracker> Mikoto Minagi [Ohtori Academy (11)] has posed.

Kimonos in every design, for every price! Mikoto finds herself wandering immediately, and she finds herself drawn to a tray full of fashionable trinkets - little rings and necklaces in gold. But it's not the jewellery which catches her eye. She picks up a hair-clip, turning it over in pale hands. It's sturdy, ceramic, in the style of a golden feather.

Keen ears still pick up Mai's voice; she could hear her through a crowd any day. Of course Mai doesn't think she should get a new kimono. That's something Mikoto expects entirely.

Mikoto frowns, puffs her cheeks out, and makes a decision immediately.

Mai will find her at the register, her little cat-faced purse out as she tries to figure out the correct change. The clerk rolls his eyes at the small notes she pays in, but she's concentrating too hard on figuring out the maths to notice. Mai's question pulls her head up just as she's done handing the money over, in return for a little paper bag. What could be inside?

She cants her head as she considers, a thoughtful hum between closed lips. "They're pretty," she deliberates. "Maybe we should!" Oh, no, she's including Mai in that statement.

<Pose Tracker> Mai Tokiha [Ohtori Academy (12)] has posed.

Mai looks at the yellow kimono one last time, considers the state of her finances, and lets out another regretful sigh. Maybe, being as it is for a special occasion, she might have been able to justify treating herself...if not for two weeks of not being able to go out and find part-time work to bolster her accounts.

Even having recovered physically, her finances are...not where she'd like them to be. Given that there's a perfectly serviceable piece of festival-friendly clothing in her closet, it's too pricey to justify. She might not be trying to burn herself out right now, but it's...

Next year. Maybe next year.

Regrets and a new kimono left behind, she makes her way to the register. For a moment, she blinks owlishly at Mikoto's purchase...whatever it is in that bag. She lost track of her companion, and who knows what she's doing...

...well, Mikoto seems to, at any rate.

There's a thoughtful expression on Mai's face as she glances back toward the racks, to the pieces that might still be within an only slightly overspent budget... In the end, though, she steps out of the way of the register, and shakes her head. She didn't miss that pronoun. "I'm...pretty sure I have one or two things at home that still fit. I should really check them first before getting myself something new..."

There's an unspoken question there, a meaningful look to Mikoto. The girl from the mountains might not have something, and that might be worth getting...

<Pose Tracker> Mikoto Minagi [Ohtori Academy (11)] has posed.

Mikoto Minagi doesn't worry a lot about money, because she rarely buys much at all. Mashiro with her scholarship covers the important things, and she doesn't really worry about material goods beyond where her next snack is coming from.

(Which might be why she's still wearing her Ohtori flats, even in the midst of the holidays.)

But Mai does worry, and Mikoto has seen the way she scans through the temporary jobs on her phone. So when she shakes her head and steps away, Mikoto doesn't protest. She made an effort, but money is important to Mai, so she guesses it's no good.

Mikoto is not terribly good at getting unstated questions, but she is good at reading Mai's looks, and it clues her into the question after a beat. She tilts her head, a considering noise. She has some fancy clothes, because it's Ohtori and those are considered necessities. Some of them even haven't been destroyed! But festival clothing...?

"Don't think I've got any," Mikoto says, after a moment's thought.

<Pose Tracker> Mai Tokiha [Ohtori Academy (12)] has posed.

There's that purchase, mysterious as it is - but Mikoto's money is Mikoto's, and Mai has never really pushed. The scholarship comes with the lodgings and tuition, after all - and there's no point quibbling over food expenses, unexpected guests being what they are.

As a whole, though...Mai does worry. It's not that she's short on funds for herself - between Mashiro's annoying generosity and the jobs she's managed to hold down, her personal finances are frankly doing pretty well for a normal high schooler. But...that money isn't for herself, is it? She has to be a responsible person, after all.

Her face doesn't betray too much of the guilt, betray too much of the resentment, but there's a little. She glances away, looks toward the window. "Well, if you want, we can see what they have in your style. It's that or get stuck with a hand-me-down. And you're right, they are rather pretty. Maybe...check out the rest of the district, and come back?"

It might be better to flee the temptation...or buy time to get worn down.

<Pose Tracker> Mikoto Minagi [Ohtori Academy (11)] has posed.

Mai suggests having a look, and Mikoto's face lights up and she goes right for the first one which drew her eye: a pale and understated blue, white details like clouds about it, red and yellow details. She pulls it out, showing it to Mai triumphantly and without a hint of hesitation. "This one!"

Unfortunately, deferring things was never one of Mikoto's strong points.

That Mai might have been trying to make excuses doesn't really occur to her, because surely Mai was suggesting they try and find other kimonos, and Mikoto has already decided on the kimono she likes.

Luckily, a simple design like that doesn't run too pricy. And once they're out of the store, Mikoto drags them off to a park off the main road which is, at the least, not nearly as crowded. There's even a bench! Mikoto swings Miroku's case around to lean beside it and sits, beaming over to Mai. She hands over that little bag - and inside, the ceramic hairclip. "Long hair's a problem," she explains, simply. "Gotta keep it under control." And Mai seems reluctant to get a haircut, so Mikoto has elected to solve the problem herself. Of course, it would be better if she got it cut short so that no one could use it against her, but... well, maybe Mai likes it that way. Maybe she thinks it looks nice too.

<Pose Tracker> Mai Tokiha [Ohtori Academy (12)] has posed.

The nice thing about shopping with Mikoto is that she is alarmingly direct. No gatherer mentality in this hunter - identify prey, and strike. It is quite possibly the fastest shopping for clothes Mai has been a part of.

(The prize for slowest still goes to Takumi. He knows what he did.)

In short order, they've escaped the clothes shop, with Mai having gotten little for herself but a thought for later. Tomorrow, maybe. After checking her closet. There are other shops to check, little grocery stores that might have a few extra things for supper - but Mikoto brings Mai out of the crowd, and over to a bench. The bag being for her is a surprise, and at seeing the hair clip...

There's no retort, no quick answer.

Mai just stares at the gift for the moment, confusion plain on her face at having received something. Fortunately, there's an explanation, and Mai looks up at Mikoto at the words. A hand idly comes up to the back of her head, runs fingers through her hair, noting that it really has been getting a bit longer than usual...

She looks at the clip again, then back up at Mikoto, and she still seems lost...but slowly, a faint smile finds its way onto her face. "...thanks, Mikoto, it's lovely. You didn't have to, honest, but....thanks." Mikoto says what she means, after all. It's just to help deal with a liability, and...maybe this was more direct than asking her to get a haircut.

She takes a moment to tidy her hair, attaching the clip so that the feather can glint in the daylight. It's hard to tell herself - no mirror here after all, but... "...does it look all right?"

<Pose Tracker> Mikoto Minagi [Ohtori Academy (11)] has posed.

Mikoto is awful at lingering in stores, hemming and hawing over her purchases, because she knows just what she's about.

It's probably a good thing she doesn't have much money, given that.

There are other shops, but Mikoto wants to give Mai this, first, since Mai didn't end up getting anything at all. She watches curiously as Mai stares at it, wondering if, perhaps, her intuition was wrong. She's not very good at decorations. Her logical explanation is as much a way to explain why it's worth Mai's time even if it doesn't suit her aesthetics.

But Mai smiles, and Mikoto smiles, too, relieved that she's accepted it. "I wanted to!" She chirps, in reply. And as Mai well knows, when Mikoto wants to do something, she does it.

(Mai's never come across a situation where Mikoto couldn't do what she wanted, after all. Surely there is no area she is restricted at all.)

She examines Mai's placement of the clip, and nods, firmly, after a moment. "Yup!" It looks good. A haircut would still be better, but this is better than nothing. And Mai gets something nice. Mai doesn't let herself have nice things, so it's fine to do it for her, right?

She beams, and lets the statement hang in quiet after that. The city provides plenty of background noise to fill the gaps.

Isn't it nice when Mikoto solves her problems with fashion rather than fierceness?

<Pose Tracker> Mai Tokiha [Ohtori Academy (12)] has posed.

Mai smiles, because Mikoto's smiling, and...that's what matters, right? And if Mikoto says the hairclip looks fine, then...

Well, it's probably fine. She can check for herself in a mirror later, but for now Mai can at least trust Mikoto's judgment.

For the moment, things are as quiet as they can get. Even the park is busy on a day like today; teenagers run amok, either preparing to celebrate the festival or just enjoying a day out and about. The other benches fill up rapidly; even without trying too hard, Mai can overhear snippets of conversation from one couple or another. There's one familiar tone, rapidly rising in volume, and she actually turns to stare in those teens' direction for a moment.

Stare, or maybe even glare. The sounds of an argument growing from trivial to loud...Mai just turns away, pinching the bridge of her nose. "And here I'd hoped I'd never hear from that ridiculous pair again...a lot of dates going on today, it seems."

Sighing, Mai turns to Mikoto. "Anyway, that's not important. Not that I don't appreciate a chance to get out and about, but...is something going on? Usually we don't need to go this far afield for shopping..."

A new kimono is all well and good, but in theory there's homework that they should be doing tonight. So...maybe something's up?

<Pose Tracker> Mikoto Minagi [Ohtori Academy (11)] has posed.

Mikoto's hearing is keen; it's not difficult for her to pick up that argument, and she glances sidelong to them. There's something there that makes her frown, makes her think of things which aren't shopping at all.

They can argue like that, and so loudly, but they're dating...

She's pulled from her thoughts by Mai's questioning tone, and Mikoto turns back to her, tilting her head. "It's holidays," she says, in simple explanation. "Should do stuff like this sometimes, right?"

Well - sometimes.

Mai needs to catch up on her work.

Mikoto keeps disappearing.

It's a point which is so obvious Mikoto doesn't bother to acknowledge it directly at all.

She considers that explanation entirely complete, and she's quiet again, for a long moment. Glances back to that couple again - they're being terribly obnoxious - and then back to Mai. Her tone goes contemplative as she says: "... hey, Mai... can I get advice?"

<Pose Tracker> Mai Tokiha [Ohtori Academy (12)] has posed.

It's holidays. Much as Mai might worry over finances, much as she might need to make up for lost time...this week, there's not a whole lot she can do. Most of the temp jobs for the week have dried up, or were filled long ago...so apart from catching up on schoolwork, Mai hasn't had much to do but worry.

And worry some more.

"I suppose that's right...am I really that bad at taking time off?" Mai considers her own question for maybe three seconds, then hangs her head in exasperation. "On second thought, don't answer that. Maybe we should try to find somewhere else to go before the week's over. A shame the beach isn't really an option yet..."

Maybe nice things can happen. Takumi seems to be enjoying himself, after all, so why can't she do the same? Or at least part of the same.

...Mai, too, is quiet for a long moment - and then, as the argument between that distant couple escalates to a poured can of pineapple juice, Mikoto speaks up. The older girl answers in as quiet a tone as she can manage, murmuring beneath the commotion going on a few dozen metres away. "...whenever you want, Mikoto. What's the problem?"

<Pose Tracker> Mikoto Minagi [Ohtori Academy (11)] has posed.

Mai asks that question, and Mikoto just gives her a look, one side of her mouth scrunching up in frustration as if to say 'yes, of course you are'.

Then again, Mikoto's not very good at taking time off right now either. She brightens, as Mai suggests going somewhere else. "Yeah!"

Maybe nice things can happen, even if she doesn't know whether her Lord Brother is enjoying himself or not.

Oh. That's not a fun thought at all.

And it brings to mind the can of worms called 'Kasagami' which she has failed entirely to face. Mikoto frowns, humming frustration behind closed lips. "Mai... said words were fighting too," she starts, uncertainly. "Words can be attacks, and that's why words hurt, right? And it makes sense my enemies would wanna hurt me."

Mikoto's lips press together in a thin line as she frowns down at the bag in her lap, kimono carefully folded within. "But... what about when friends say stuff which hurts? Friends don't... attack. Enemies do." Her own voice is quiet, and not through any conscious attempt to modulate her tone.

<Pose Tracker> Mai Tokiha [Ohtori Academy (12)] has posed.

Yeah. That look.

Does it help to be aware of one's flaws, if there's no plan to change them?

There's some serious conversation to be had, though, and so Mai can put thoughts of work ethics aside to focus on Mikoto's worries. A lot of focus is going to be needed, given the topic, and the hot springs were only a few days ago. It might be a mercy that there's been no school this week, but that's not going to last...

The older girl purses her lips, breathing carefully. The wrong words on her part might do more harm than good, but on the other hand Mikoto's been hurt by something a friend said and Mai kind of wants to yell at whoever it was...but that might not help.

"It's...messy." She glances over to the argument-in-progress, where a couple is breaking up for...what, the fiftieth time, by now? "Words -can- be a way to fight, just like anything physical. They're a way your enemies might try to hurt you. But...it's also possible for words to hurt by accident. Or...possible for a friend to try to use them to help."

It's also possible for words to get a lot of people hurt, Mai can't avoid thinking. She holds up a hand, blocking out the sun's rays for a moment while trying to find a good example to use. "It's like...spicy food. That's a kind of hurt for you, right? By now, anyone who knows you should know not to give you things like that Super Cayenne Curry Bread. If an enemy were cooking for you, they'd probably give you something like that, right?"

She glances over at Mikoto. Anyone she uses as an example, here, might be in danger...so there's really only one choice. Her gaze falls, and her shoulders droop in shame. "...but your friends aren't always perfect. I've screwed up and put the wrong spice in a dish by accident - not because I was trying to attack you, but that doesn't mean it didn't hurt you. So a friend's words might be a bad choice at the time, and they can hurt by accident. And then...remember the time I tried making that 'earthy' curry, to find something mild enough that you could enjoy? That one wasn't trying to be mean - but it was trying to help find something you could enjoy."

Even if that one didn't really work out.

"So...maybe your friends' words are like that. Either something said that hurt by accident, or...maybe trying to help. The best thing to do if it's a friend is...I guess give them the benefit of the doubt. Tell them that you don't like what they did or said, and see if they're willing to stop. If they don't....then maybe it's a problem after all."

<Pose Tracker> Mikoto Minagi [Ohtori Academy (11)] has posed.

With school out, Mikoto can avoid her classmates so much easier.

Of course, there are... other people she would never avoid.

... let's not think about that one too hard.

It's messy, Mai says, and Mikoto listens, frowning in confusion. It doesn't make much sense for attacks to be accidental. There's an active decision made whenever someone fights. And if words are fighting, well -

But she doesn't interrupt. Mai gives her a concrete example, and Mikoto nods, humming thoughtfully. It's easier to understand examples. She remembers that one time Mai put something too red in an omelette - and how Mikoto upended half the furniture before she managed to find the sink in her blind rage. Mai hadn't meant to do that. She was just tired because she'd been working so late.

It hurt, but it wasn't on purpose.

And words can hurt, but not on purpose, too..?

"Accident," Mikoto echoes, tilting her head as she considers. "So I should tell them... maybe they don't realise it hurts." And she seems like she's able to absorb the information well enough. She's at least not rejecting it out of hand.

She frowns, dipping her chin. "But what if they don't get it?"

<Pose Tracker> Mai Tokiha [Ohtori Academy (12)] has posed.

It's always messy. People talking to each other honestly about their problems...Mai hasn't been able to do that with her own brother in years. So people talk, and sometimes the wrong thing is said - like putting the wrong ingredient in a dish. At that point...the sensible thing to do, what Mai could only hope Mikoto would do, is to talk it out.

The less sensible approach, which Mai has put into practice for far too long, is to be quiet and endure it.

Mai nods as Mikoto at least seems to grasp the idea she was trying to get across. "Yeah. It's also..." She hesitates, uncertain if it's a good idea to bring in another idea so soon. "...if it's a friend, they might think it's more important to get something said than to worry about the hurt. Sort of like if I had a fly landing on my shoulder, and you went to swat it. Either way, like you said you should tell them. If it wasn't an accident maybe at least they'll tell you why."

Mikoto's last question, though...for a moment, Mai just looks tired, and sad. Not hesitating because she knows the answer, but...because she does. "If they 'don't get it' - if you tell them to stop, and they keep going anyway...it doesn't matter if it's a sparring match, talking with words, or even cooking. Refusing to listen like that means they're in the wrong, and you should make-"

A moment's hesitation.

"...and you should get out of there, if you can." Mai bites her lip, hoping that that...will be enough.

<Pose Tracker> Mikoto Minagi [Ohtori Academy (11)] has posed.

Mikoto is very good at being honest. Sometimes she's too good at being honest.

And that's the thing about honest people.

No one expects them to ever lie about anything.

No one expects them to let their friends carry on with their assumptions so they don't get hurt.

But that's not a lie. That's just... not saying the truth...

... well, it's fine, because her friends are happy, and that makes Mikoto happy too.

She frowns, thoughtfully, as Mai keeps explaining. Trying to say something even if it's not perfect - that's a very familiar thing, to Mikoto, who struggles at times with her words.

She thinks of the way Eri didn't tell her why, and shakes her head, braids flicking every which way. No, she'd rather not think of that at all.

She turns her gaze back to Mai, instead, as she speaks. She looks sad, and that worries Mikoto. She says that...

Mikoto bites at her lip, glances away. There's something in that statement which has clearly troubled her.

(They're her friends, and she should be loyal to them. They're her friends, and she shouldn't leave them to deal with things alone. They're her friends, and Mikoto's the one who's supposed to listen, anyway.)

But Mai looks so sad and tired, and Mikoto can't bear to worry her. So she nods, with an understated affirmative noise. "I'll try..." A sound of frustration, then, as Mikoto realises she's made Mai sad, when she wanted them to have fun - and Mikoto straightens, looking back to her.

"Mai! Let's go find cafe! I want cake!" Cake will surely fix this problem.

<Pose Tracker> Mai Tokiha [Ohtori Academy (12)] has posed.

It's an important lesson, but Mai never got to learn it properly. She can only do so much. Try, and try again...

So she worries about things she can't control, worries about how much Mikoto is being hurt, and Mikoto worries that she's worrying. Maybe they should talk it out, suffer the hurts again so Mai can yell at the culprit...

"...you know what? A cafe sounds pretty good right now."

Cake won't solve the problem but it will at least make for a nice day.
