The small, dark-clad girl sits on the top of a building, a large silver hammer hoisted on her left shoulder. She looks down, watching the people below who are blatantly unaware of the darkness that truly lurks in their midst. Knowing that at any minute any one of them could be taken by it, she is on guard.
A soft sigh escapes her lips as she sits there as if expecting something...
It's relatively quiet though and as the pale moonlight shines in the sky, she glances at her phone. Only a little while longer and she can go back to the dorms and sleep for a bit before school. Before long though a sudden commotion catches her attention. She knows exactly where the noise came from and quickly makes her way to the World Tree. She was aware of the rumours of it blossoming. It takes her some time to get there however and just as she approaches it she finds herself being bound.
Kimiko tries in sheer desperation to pull herself free but she screams out in agony as the binds that have overtaken her pulse and shock making her whole body tense into a hard spasm. She trembles from the feeling it gives and it takes her seconds to find her voice.
"W-what is going on?!" She calls out in desperation but there is no answer before the darkness consumes her mind...

It's too bright.
Light pouring through the blinds on her second-floor window is the first thing that brings Kimiko back to the waking world. She yawns and stretches, trying to shake the sleep from her body but then pulls the covers back over her head, shutting out the brightness of the morning.
Only seconds later, the door to her bedroom swings open. The sudden noise in the relative peacefulness of the morning startles her and makes her quickly sit upright as the blanket slides from her head forcing her to face the light again.
As her eyes adjust, a small voice calls out to her, "Onee-chan!!!! Waaaaaaaaaake up! It's time to get ready for schoooooool!" The girl who appears to be about 7 years old, climbs on top of the bed, startling a small black cat sleeping nearby. The cat protests his sleep being interrupted with a tiny meow and runs out of the room. Meanwhile, Mayumi begins jumping up and down on the bed at Kimiko's feet, repeating herself in a sing-song way until the teenager finally responds.
"Mayumi-chan, get down before you fall! Did mom send you up here?" She groans, scrunching up her face in a scowl, but the younger girl just laughs and pulls the floral, pink bed covers completely off of Kimiko's bed before sitting down next to her. She lays a head on her shoulder. "You know you're my faaaaaaavorite sister right?" Her big brown eyes peer up at Kimiko. "It's time to eat breakfast!" She bounds off the bed suddenly and runs down the hallway, singing a happy, nameless tune to herself.
Kimiko stretches again and looks at the time on her bedside clock. For once, she actually has time to eat. After heading into the bathroom to prepare for the day, she glances at herself in the mirror, making sure everything is neatly in place. The reflection staring back at her gives her a strange feeling that she cannot quite place. It makes her uneasy but before she can have time to reflect on why, her mind is brought back to the present when she hears Mayumi calling for her again from downstairs.
Straightening her long ponytail, she makes it to the kitchen and sees her family already sitting down to eat. Her dad looks up from the counter. "Well...it's about time you joined us sleepyhead!" Seiji walks over and ruffles her hair. "Don't you just love having your own personal alarm clock? I think we will have to use her every day. What do you think Mayumi-chan?" He grins at child and she nods in agreement before her attention turns to the plate of food that is placed in front of her.
Kimiko looks over to her mom and is about to say something but suddenly and without warning there are tears in her eyes and she knows why she felt uneasy just moments before. "Kimiko-chan? Are you okay?" Ayuka walks over to her, placing a concerned hand on her shoulder. "I-It's nothing mom. I just had a really awful dream last night." She rubs her eyes and looks at Mayumi who is beaming at her, seemingly unaware of what just happened.
"Mom, did you really have to send her up there this morning? I thought that's why I had an alarm clock!" Ayuka laughs. "Well, it worked out better for all of us didn't it? Isn't it nice to have breakfast together for a change? And you're not rushing off to school without eating like usual." Ayuka Akane took great care in making sure that her family sat down together for a meal as often as possible and breakfast was especially important to her.
Looking down at the plate set before her, Kimiko smiles. "I guess you're right. This food looks delicious as always! Thank you mom!" She eagerly devours the meal as the family talks about their plans for the day ahead. For some reason, this morning feels different to her, everything seems brighter and more peaceful and she can't remember ever being this happy or content before.
After breakfast, Kimiko runs up to grab her school bag as Mayumi runs by her door. "Onee-chan, can you help me with my shoes?" The older girl sighs loudly and dramatically. "I taught you how to do it last year. Why do you still always ask me?" Mayumi smiles mischieviously. "Because... I already told you remember?" She pauses, being dramatic. "You're my most favorite big sister in the entire world of course." Laughing, Kimiko ruffles her hair. "Okay you win this time!" She bends down to tie the child's shoes before standing and adjusting the bag on her shoulder.
Together, the two of them head downstairs to the front door and there is a bus sitting outside. "Don't be late Mayumi-chan! I will see you after school okay?" The two girls embrace for a moment before Mayumi disappears into the bus. Shortly after, a car pulls up in front of the house as Ayuka steps up behind Kimiko, "Kimiko-chan, you almost forgot your lunch!" She hands her a small bag neatly tied with a bow. "Oh! Thank you mom! Rena is here! I gotta go!"
Turning to head down the pathway, Kimiko suddenly stops and then runs back to the door and she reaches out and embraces Ayuka. "Kimiko-chan, are you okay? That must have been some dream you had." She pauses, brushing a stray hair from the teenager's face and smiles. "But... I will always take hugs no matter what." She bends to give her a kiss on the forehead. "Have a good day honey!"
